Vienna Shooting Leaves 2 Dead, 35 Injured at Georgia Homecoming Block Party

Two men were killed, and 35 other people were injured after gunfire erupted early Sunday, October 4, at a crowded neighborhood block party in Vienna, Georgia.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said more than 1,000 people were gathered in the area when the shooting began, making it one of the most serious mass-casualty incidents to hit the small South Georgia community.

Dooly County Sheriff Craig Peavy identified those killed as Jaquevion Jackson, 21, of Cordele, and Macaleb Jackson, 23, of Hawkinsville. As of early Monday, October 5, investigators had announced no arrests, publicly identified no suspects or persons of interest, and offered no confirmed motive.

Shooting Began Shortly After 1 A.M.

Dooly County Sheriff’s Office deputies were already patrolling the neighborhood block party when shots were reported at about 1:25 a.m. from the 900 block of Pine Street, according to state investigators.

Deputies responding to the gunfire found multiple wounded people. Jackson and Jackson were discovered farther along Pine Street, in the 600 block, and were pronounced dead at the scene. The remaining victims were transported to several regional hospitals.

Sheriff Peavy told the Associated Press that more than 50 shots were fired in at least two locations about a block apart. The gathering extended across several blocks and included more than 1,000 people. Deputies encountered additional gunfire after the initial shooting began, adding to the confusion as people scattered from the area.

The 35 injured people ranged in age from 14 to 51, according to authorities. ABC Columbia reported that some remained in critical condition Sunday evening, while others were stable.

Officials said most of the injuries involved gunfire, although authorities were still determining precisely how many people had been shot rather than hurt while fleeing.

Hospitals Faced a Large Influx of Patients

Crisp Regional Hospital, about nine miles from the shooting scene, activated its trauma and emergency response procedures shortly after 2 a.m.

By 2 p.m. Sunday, Crisp Regional had treated 26 patients connected to the incident. According to Atlanta News First, two patients were transferred to other facilities, two required emergency surgery, several were admitted for continued treatment, and others were treated and released. Additional victims received care elsewhere in the region.

The number of victims presented an unusually large emergency response for the rural area, requiring coordination among local law enforcement, state investigators, emergency medical crews and several hospitals.

No Arrests Announced in Latest Update

Investigators had not publicly identified a shooter or established a motive by early Monday. GBI Director Chris Hosey said officials did not want to make assumptions about what triggered the violence before investigators had established the facts. An Investing.com report citing authorities also said investigators did not believe there was a continuing threat to the wider public.

The GBI is leading the investigation at the request of the Dooly County Sheriff’s Office. Autopsies on the two people killed were assigned to the GBI Medical Examiner’s Office. Once the investigation is completed, the case file is expected to be sent to the Cordele Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for review and possible prosecution.

Authorities have asked witnesses and anyone with information to contact the GBI Regional Investigative Office in Perry or submit an anonymous tip through the agency’s tip system.

Party Coincided With Dooly County Homecoming Weekend

The gathering took place during Dooly County High School’s homecoming weekend, but Superintendent Sherrod Willaford said the block party was not a school-sponsored event. The district said schools would reopen Monday with additional safety measures and crisis support available for students and families affected by the shooting.

The investigation now centers on determining who fired the weapons, whether multiple shooters were involved and what led to the violence. Those questions remained unresolved as authorities continued collecting evidence and interviewing witnesses Monday.
