My Methodology

  • When I researched and wrote the piece on Chicago’s most dangerous neighborhoods, my approach was all about balance. I wanted to capture both the facts and the stories behind the numbers. I lived there for a short period of my life; my sister lives there, and two of my friends as well.
They told me a lot of their stories, while I also took some of my own experience into account.
  • I started by analyzing crime data from trusted sources like AreaVibes, CrimeGrade and reports by local agencies, which provided hard statistics. But I didnโ€™t stop there.
  • I went deeper, exploring the social and economic factors contributing to the high crime rates in these areas, giving a sense of what itโ€™s actually like for people living there.
  • I collected FBI data about Chicago and Illinois.
  • I browsed through Reddit comments regarding local and travel experiences.
