Savitha Shan, a 21-year-old University of Texas at Austin student identified by police as one of the victims in the deadly shooting outside Buford’s Backyard Beer Garden on West Sixth Street, is being remembered by classmates and university leaders as a high-achieving student with a future that was already taking shape. Austin police and local reporting identified Shan among the victims in the March 1 attack.
The Times of India report described Shan as an Indian-origin honors student who was just weeks away from graduating and preparing to begin her career, and said she had already secured a role at a major professional services firm. It also cited tributes from UT-affiliated voices who described her as a standout student and a strong presence in the classroom.
Local reporting from KUT added that UT Austin President Jim Davis called Shan a “Longhorn preparing to change the world,” and said a number of UT students were also injured in the same attack.

ToggleWhat Happened in Downtown Austin
The shooting unfolded early Sunday outside Buford’s, a popular bar in Austin’s West Sixth Street nightlife district, an area frequented by students and other late-night crowds.
Police said the suspect allegedly fired into the area from a vehicle, then exited and continued shooting before officers, who were already nearby, responded within about a minute and fatally shot him.
Austin police later identified the suspect as 53-year-old Ndiaga Diagne, according to AP reporting. Investigators said they are reviewing thousands of hours of video and interviewing more than 150 witnesses as they work to establish motive and sequence.
Victims and Changing Casualty Counts
In fast-moving attacks, early casualty counts often shift, and that happened here. AP reporting initially described two people killed and 14 wounded at the scene, while later local updates confirmed a third victim, Jorge Pederson, died after being hospitalized. KUT reported that APD announced Pederson’s death late Monday.
That means the confirmed civilian death toll rose after initial reports, while the suspect was also killed by police. KUT also noted that Austin-Travis County EMS had earlier reported 14 people hospitalized, including several in critical condition before later updates.
Terrorism Angle Under Investigation, but Motive Not Confirmed
Federal and local authorities are investigating the shooting as a potential act of terrorism, but officials have repeatedly emphasized that it is too early to state a definitive motive.
Reuters reported that the FBI was examining possible terror links as one of multiple investigative paths, while Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis said the priority remains determining why the suspect opened fire.
AP and Reuters both reported that the suspect wore clothing with references to Iran and “Property of Allah,” which contributed to the terrorism-related inquiry. At the same time, AP and KUT both reported that investigators said the suspect had not previously been on the FBI’s or APD’s radar.
That distinction matters. The terrorism framework describes the direction of the investigation, not a final legal conclusion about motive. Reuters explicitly framed the situation as authorities probing possible Iran and terror links while saying it was “too soon to tell.”
A Campus and City in Mourning
UT Austin and the broader Austin community have responded with public grief and memorials. KUT reported makeshift tributes outside the bar and statements from Buford’s owners expressing condolences to families and describing the victims as young people with their lives ahead of them.
For UT Austin, Shan’s death has become a focal point of the tragedy, not only because she was close to graduation, but because she represented the kind of student universities celebrate as a future leader.
Reporting from TOI and local outlets points to the same portrait: a serious student, well-regarded on campus, whose life was interrupted just before a major transition into professional life.
What Remains Unresolved
Investigators are still sorting through witness accounts, video footage, and evidence. Police and federal officials have said they are in the early stages, and some details reported across outlets, including ages and injury counts, have varied as the case develops.
The strongest confirmed facts remain Shan’s identity, the location and scale of the attack, the suspect’s death at the scene, and the ongoing federal-local investigation into motive.
