A crew member from the Norwegian Breakaway remained missing Sunday after falling overboard off Cape Cod during the ship’s return voyage from Bermuda to Boston, prompting an overnight search by the U.S. Coast Guard before crews suspended the operation pending new information.
The incident happened late Saturday, April 25, about 12 miles east of Wellfleet, Massachusetts. According to the Coast Guard, security camera footage showed the crew member falling from the vessel into Massachusetts waters. The person’s name had not been released, and officials had not publicly identified a cause for the fall.

ToggleShip Turned Back After Overboard Alert
The Norwegian Breakaway, operated by Norwegian Cruise Line, was traveling toward Boston when the overboard emergency was confirmed. The ship returned to the crew member’s last known position and deployed rescue boats and life rings, according to Coast Guard accounts cited by Boston and Fox Business.
Passengers told CBS Boston that a ship-wide man-overboard announcement went out during the night. One passenger described seeing search activity outside the vessel as crews worked in darkness off the Cape Cod coast.
The emergency turned a routine end-of-cruise return into a search-and-rescue operation in one of the most unforgiving settings at sea: cold, dark Atlantic water, miles from shore, with time working against rescuers.
Coast Guard Search Continued Into Sunday
Coast Guard Sector Southeastern New England joined the search after being notified of the incident.
A Coast Guard MH-60 helicopter arrived on scene at about 1:19 a.m., and a crew from Coast Guard Station Provincetown also assisted. Later Sunday morning, an HC-144 aircraft took over the aerial search, according to reports citing the Coast Guard.
The search was suspended at 12:25 p.m. Sunday, pending new information. That language is important. A suspended search does not mean investigators have closed the matter, but it does mean active search operations had stopped unless new evidence or sightings emerge.
Norwegian Cruise Line said the ship immediately alerted the U.S. Coast Guard Marine Rescue Coordination Center once the incident was confirmed. The company said the Coast Guard took over the search-and-rescue operation and later released the vessel to continue to Boston.

The Norwegian Breakaway reached Boston’s Black Falcon Terminal shortly before noon Sunday, later than scheduled, CBS Boston reported. Passengers scheduled for the next sailing were told embarkation would be delayed because the ship had remained involved in search-and-rescue efforts overnight and into the morning.
Norwegian Cruise Line said in a statement that the safety, security, and well-being of its crew remained its highest priority, and that its thoughts were with the crew member’s family.
Key Questions Remain Unanswered

Authorities have not said how the crew member went overboard beyond confirming that surveillance video showed the fall. That leaves several major questions unresolved, including where on the ship the fall occurred, whether anyone witnessed it directly, and whether working conditions, weather, ship movement, or another factor played any role.
Care is needed in describing the case. Available reporting does not support claims that the crew member jumped, climbed, or acted intentionally.
The verified fact is narrower: a crew member was seen on security footage falling from the Norwegian Breakaway, and search crews were unable to locate the person before operations were suspended.
The case now leaves two tracks: a family waiting for answers, and maritime authorities reviewing a serious overboard incident involving one of Norwegian Cruise Line’s large Boston-bound vessels.
