Law enforcement sources believe Hayden Panettiere died from a fentanyl overdose after allegedly taking pills provided by a long-time drug dealer in Los Angeles, according to reports published Monday.
The actress died on Sunday, August 16, at age 36. She was found unresponsive at a home in Greenville, S.C., where first responders claimed she was in “cardiac arrest” after an apparent overdose. EMS attempted to resuscitate her, but Panettiere was pronounced dead at the scene.

Insiders told TMZ that Panettiere had a “long time drug dealer” in Los Angeles who provided her with “black-market prescription drugs,” including oxycodone. The outlet learned that Panettiere allegedly took numerous pills during her flight from LA to South Carolina, and on the morning of her death, she reportedly took an oxycodone that authorities believe was laced with fentanyl.
The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) in Los Angeles is now working to uncover Panettiere’s relationship with her alleged drug dealer and trace the pill back to them. As of now, nothing is confirmed. Toxicology results are still pending, and her official cause of death remains unknown.
Boyfriend Was Present at Time of Death
Panettiere’s on-again, off-again boyfriend Brian Hickerson and his brother, Zach, were with the Nashville star when she died. According to a police report obtained by NBC News, Brian showed police a bag of prescription pills that Panettiere was allegedly taking at the time of her death.
Director Says Intervention ‘Did Not Happen’
Three days after her death, director Griff Furst, who worked with Panettiere on A Breed Apart (2025), took to Instagram to pay tribute to the two-time Golden Globe nominee. In a video, Furst said he was “rooting” for her to “beat the addiction that she spoke about openly and publicly herself.”
“A producer or director, no matter how certain you are that an actor or crew member is in a bad situation, you don’t have the proof, or the benefit of the time to verify it,” he continued. “You can adjust the schedule, you can collect internal reporting and you can assign a handler to make sure that that individual is being taken care of as best as they can.”
Furst added that when filming wrapped, he kept in touch with Panettiere’s team and “what eventually got determined was that she might need an intervention and I was asked to participate.”
“I said yes, and that intervention did not happen, at least not that I’m aware of,” he said. “I wasn’t leading the charge on that and it wouldn’t have been appropriate for me.”

The DEA investigation into Panettiere’s alleged drug dealer remains ongoing. Toxicology results are still pending, and her official cause of death has not been formally determined. Reports describing the overdose as confirmed would be premature without completed toxicology testing and an official ruling from authorities.
