Indiana Businesses Call on Congress to Pass Equality Act

A coalition of Indiana-based businesses is calling on Congress to take decisive action by passing the Equality Act, which would provide nationwide protections for LGBTQ+ individuals against discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

In a letter addressed to U.S. Senators, dozens of companies from across the state emphasize that discrimination is not only morally wrong but also detrimental to business and economic growth.

By codifying these protections into federal law, the businesses argue, the United States can ensure a more inclusive and welcoming environment for all. Below is the full text of the letter:

Dear Senators,

Indiana is the home of Hoosier hospitality. Whether weโ€™re recruiting new employers or hosting March Madness, we welcome all.

That is why, as members of Indianaโ€™s business community, we urge Congress to pass the Equality Act to ensure that all Americans are treated with respect and dignity, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

Itโ€™s time to update our federal laws to ensure LGBTQ+ Americans are no longer at risk of being fired from a job, refused a place to live, denied service in a place of business or withheld critical medical care because of who they are or who they love.

From our perspective, discrimination is bad for business. In order to attract and retain top talent, we need all states โ€“ including the Hoosier State โ€“ to be welcoming and accepting of all people. Itโ€™s not just the right thing to do โ€“ it also just makes economic sense.

While the recent U.S. Supreme Court decision inย Bostock v. Clayton Countyย provides guidance in cases of discrimination, the Equality Act would ensure those protections are codified in federal law and withstand the test of time.

As employers, we value consistency. Thatโ€™s why we believe itโ€™s critical to enshrine these protections in federal law to make it clear that no matter where you go, these safeguards will be in place. Discrimination against LGBTQ+ people should be prevented everywhere, not just in states that adopt their own rules.

We call on Congress to pass the Equality Act to ensure equal protection for all people on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity so that our nation reflects the same shared commitment to inclusivity and diversity that we embrace as business leaders.
