WATCH: New Ad Showcasing the Harms of Anti-Transgender Discrimination in Places of Public Accommodation Launches

Last week the Movement Advancement Project (MAP) released a new ad showing the experience of a transgender man trying to access a men’s restroom, and being asked to leave the movie theater he was patronizing.

The video captures an experience all too familiar for many LGBTQ people, and especially transgender people – the moment of being denied service because of who you are.

The release of the video coincides with a new report released by MAP about the state of LGBTQ non-discrimination protections in places of public accommodation. Freedom for All Americans is proud to have partnered with MAP on the new report. Click here for more information on the report.

The ad builds on the national discussion sparked by a video released just over a year ago by Freedom for All Americans, MAP, and the National Center for Transgender Equality. The video debuted during Fox News’ coverage of the Republican National Convention in summer of 2016. That ad featured a transgender woman attempting to use the women’s restroom in a restaurant, being barred from entry by the restaurant’s owner, and being helped by other women, who know that discrimination against LGBTQ people cannot be tolerated.

In 18 states and more than 200 cities, non-discrimination laws protecting transgender people in housing, employment, and public accommodations have been passed, with no uptick in safety incidents. This patchwork of laws unfortunately opens transgender people up to discrimination and harassment depending on where they live or travel.
