Supporters of LGBTQ Nondiscrimination Share Their Reactions to Masterpiece Decision
By Shane Stahl • June 4, 2018 • 2:22 pmFollowing this morning’s Supreme Court ruling in the Masterpiece case, where the justices ruled 7-2 in favor of the bakery – but, crucially, kept existing nondiscrimination laws intact, limiting the decision to this case alone – a number of elected officials, nonprofits, and other groups and individuals have taken to social media to voice their reactions.
Here’s a sampling of some of the most notable and powerful responses:
Today’s Masterpiece Cakeshop decision is disappointing. Discrimination anywhere is unacceptable. The fight for dignity and respect is not over #OpenToAll #SCOTUS https://t.co/yBkVGy3yaU

2/ To everyone disappointed or scared by this decision – this
case is not the end of our movement. I will keep up the fight to make our
country a place where all people live free from discrimination and violence
because of their sexual orientation or gender identity.— Elizabeth Esty (@RepEsty) June 4, 2018
#MasterpieceCakeshop was an opportunity for #SCOTUS to set an important anti-discrimination precedent. Today’s ruling reminds us we can never stop fighting against discrimination and underscores the need for nationwide nondiscrimination protections.https://t.co/yluMJqtOMD

Yesterday @inAsburyParkNJ, I stood with thousands of citizens who reject the type of discrimination that took place at #MasterpieceCakeshop. Regardless of #SCOTUS’ decision–no American deserves to be discriminated against because of their sexual orientation. #Pride

Today’s ruling in the Masterpiece case was narrow, but that doesn’t make the rising tide of anti-LGBT discrimination any less dangerous. We must pass the #EqualityActNow to ensure that LGBT Americans are never denied service because of who they love or who they are. #OpenToAll

I’m disappointed with this #SCOTUS ruling because no one deserves to be turned away because of their sexual orientation. Though the ruling is narrow, it is clear that the time has come for nationwide protections for the LGBTQ community. https://t.co/whZY6GLnoT

Thank you to @RepJaredPolis for putting the #MasterpieceCakeshop decision from the U.S. Supreme Court in context – and forging the path ahead. It’s well past time for LGBTQ-inclusive nondiscrimination protections, in every state: https://t.co/dx5kmz1pNC #OpenToAll pic.twitter.com/uo0pCrFbu9

There is no license to discriminate. The #SCOTUS decision in Masterpiece Cakeshop affirms the broad authority of states to enforce laws banning discrimination against LGBTQ people, but missed an opportunity to advance equality in America.

The right to be free from persecution & discrimination because of who they are or whom they love is the most fundamental right of every American. The Supreme Court’s Masterpiece Cakeshop decision fails to uphold equality. #SCOTUS https://t.co/xKBf7j51qe pic.twitter.com/pYDQqk2Cmh

5/ The #SCOTUS #Masterpiece decision simply underscores the need to ensure that the law prohibits discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity for #LGBTQ no matter where they live. #EqualityAct

No business should be allowed to discriminate against customers based on who they love. The Supreme Court ruling today is a step backwards. Every American deserves equal protection under the law. https://t.co/5IHmQzOoE4
