“This is What America is About”: The Importance of Passing the Equality Act

By Shane Stahl • April 23, 2021 • 10:08 am

Editor’s Note: This week, we’re teaming up with movement partners for an Equality Act Week of Action, which is more urgent than ever before. According to news reports, Senate offices are receiving 1,000 calls against the Equality Act for every call they get supporting it. Lawmakers pay close attention to the calls they receive when they’re considering legislation, and a call deficit like this could wipe away our years of hard work cultivating Senate support for the Equality Act.

On April 8, Freedom for All Americans co-hosted a virtual town hall with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) on why it’s more important than ever we come together and tell the Senate it’s time to pass the Equality Act. We were proud to host the event alongside transgender activist and community leader Cecilia Gentili of the New York Pride Agenda. Hundreds across the country tuned in to learn how they can take action.

Here are a couple of highlights from our conversation with Senator Schumer:

I’m very proud to partner with Speaker Pelosi and members of the House and Senate to reintroduce the Equality Act. This is essential, urgent and long overdue and it will move us closer to a society where all Americans are treated equally under the law.

“We’re going to sit down, put our heads together and decide on the best way to move forward because this is so important for what America is all about.

We have always set an example. We believe in diversity, we believe in equality, we believe we’re stronger when we have everybody protected and working together and caring about each other and loving each other.

The bottom line is simple: LGBTQ+ Americans deserve the same protections as other Americans, and Democrats and your majority leader will fight tooth and nail to make sure these are implemented at the federal level. Discrimination against LGBTQ Americans should be over once and for all and should be the law of the land in every aspect of our lives.

Let’s heed Senator Schumer’s call to get the word out to Senators—America is ready to pass the Equality Act.

The good news is that we’ve made the process incredibly simple. Use our call tool to send a message to the US Senate. We’ve provided you a brief script, and it takes less than 5 minutes.

Then, be sure to follow us on FacebookTwitter, and Instagram to see what else we’ve got planned for the Equality Act Week of Action, including a Lobby Day on April 21.
