Republican National Convention Officially Adopts Platform Rife with Discrimination Against LGBT Americans

Today, July 18, delegates at the Republican National Convention in Cleveland adopted a platform that specifically enshrines discrimination against LGBT Americans in several key planks.

The platform includes two heinous planks related specifically to anti-LGBT discrimination:

  • Anti-Transgender Plank: One of the proposed planks is a measure specifically targeting transgender Americans for discrimination. The plank hails states that have filed a lawsuit over the Obama Administration’s recent guidance calling on schools that receive federal funds to allow transgender students the freedom to use the facilities and participate in activities matching their gender identity. The proposed language is modeled on North Carolina’s widely derided and discriminatory HB2. It includes language requiring that an individual’s sex corresponds with their birth certificate, creating a new “biological sex” definition that is extremely limiting.
  • Plank Supporting Anti-LGBT Religious Exemptions: Another proposed plank would have the Party endorse the so-called First Amendment Defense Act, which will be heard in a U.S. House committee on Tuesday. The legislation would allow businesses, organizations and taxpayer funded nonprofits to legally discriminate against LGBT Americans and their families. The bill is similar to HB1523, the law that a US District Court judge in Mississippi struck down two weeks ago in a ruling that outlined how the law clearly violated the First and 14h amendments to the United States Constitution.

Matt McTighe, executive director of Freedom for All Americans, said today:

“It’s disappointing that the far right wing of the Republican Party has successfully pushed for a platform that discriminates against LGBT Americans and their families. This platform just does not reflect the direction that many Republicans – and the majority of  Americans – want to see the Party move in.”

The acutely anti-transgender platform comes as the Fairness USA coalition prepares to debut an ad featuring a transgender woman on national television on Thursday night, as Donald Trump accepts the Republican nomination. The ad has already garnered more than 2.5 million views since going online last week, and is available to view at Organizations supporting the ad include Freedom for All Americans Education Fund, Movement Advancement Project, National Center for Transgender Equality and Equality Ohio Education Fund.

McTighe added today: “The conventions are a great part of our nation’s democratic process. They were designed to highlight what makes our country great; unfortunately, this year, the GOP has decided to enshrine discrimination against LGBT Americans in its platform instead of advocating for fairness and equality under the law.”
