Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen Adds to Bipartisan Momentum for Non-Discrimination as Equality Act CosponsorBy Adam Polaski • September 13, 2016 • 11:39 am
This week United States Representative Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-Fla.) became a co-sponsor of the Equality Act, a federal bill that would establish comprehensive non-discrimination protections for LGBT Americans. Her co-sponsorship signals continued bipartisan momentum in Congress for the passage of comprehensive LGBT-inclusive non-discrimination protections.
Signing onto the bill is consistent with Rep. Ros-Lehtinen’s long history of supporting LGBT Americans and ensuring no one faces discrimination for who they are or who they love.
This summer Rep. Ros-Lehtinen appeared in a public service announcement alongside her husband and son, Rodrigo Heng-Lehtinen, who is transgender, about the importance of supporting our LGBT friends and family members. The video was produced and executed by SAVE in Miami, Florida. Earlier this month Rodrigo Heng-Lehtinen, a longtime advocate for the transgender community with a rich history in the LGBT movement, joined the team at Freedom for All Americans as our Director of Public Education. Standing up against discrimination is consistent with the conservative values of individual freedom and working hard to care for your family. Increasingly, conservatives are leading the conversation of why all Americans – including LGBT Americans – must be protected equally under the law.
Earlier this year Senator Mark Kirk (R-Ill.) and Rep. Robert Dold (R-Ill.) also signed on as Republican cosponsors of the legislation. Freedom for All Americans thanks these elected officials for their support, which is consistent with the majority of conservatives in the country who already are strong supporters of LGBT non-discrimination laws.
Protecting all LGBT Americans under federal law through comprehensive non-discrimination is essential to moving the country forward and extending full protections to all LGBT Americans. Freedom for All Americans is proud to be working on all levels – from statewide action to national public education work to municipal mobilization – to move non-discrimination forward and continue building momentum for national action.
