Parents of Transgender Son in Massachusetts Celebrate New National ProtectionsBy Adam Polaski • May 16, 2016 • 12:04 pm
Last week, Mimi and Joe Lemay, the Massachusetts parents of three children – including a 6-year-old son Jacob, who is a transgender boy – appeared on MSNBC with Thomas Roberts to discuss new guidance from the U.S. Departments of Education and Justice regarding public schools respecting transgender students’ gender identity.
The interview came just one day after a historic vote on a bill to establish full transgender non-discrimination protections in Massachusetts. Before the vote, Mimi and Joe were at the Massachusetts Statehouse to urge Senators to vote in favor of the legislation, with Mimi speaking movingly about her experience with her son Jacob. The bill passed the MA Senate by a vote of 33-4 and now heads to the House.
