Major Businesses Including Lyft & Yelp Agree Businesses Should Be Open To AllBy Shane Stahl • July 31, 2018 • 11:33 am
Lyft, Yelp, Airbnb, and Levi Strauss & Co. are among the major corporations affirming that businesses open to the public should be open to all. The Open to All coalition announced a new partnership today with the major businesses, as well as the cities of Oakland and New York. Open to All, a diverse coalition that also includes more than 1,200 small businesses and 190 organizations representing civil rights, social justice, LGBTQ equality, and people of faith; was originally formed as the Supreme Court prepared to hear the Masterpiece Cakeshop case. That case involved a bakery that refused to serve a same-sex couple.
Through its partnership with the coalition, Yelp is launching a new feature that will allow businesses to demonstrate their support for nondiscrimination. Businesses can activate a new Open To All attribute, which will show potential and existing customers that the business values the principle of nondiscrimination, and will not turn anyone away simply for being who they are or because of who they love. This is, especially important in the wake of stories including a gay male couple kicked out of an Uber for sharing a kiss, and a transgender woman asked to leave a Florida grocery store before intervention from local law enforcement.
Freedom for All Americans is proud to support the efforts of Open to All, because we know that when businesses are open to the public, they must be open for everyone, not just select groups and individuals. Masen Davis, FFAA’s Chief Executive Officer, said of the new partnership:
“We are grateful to Yelp for recognizing that America is at its best when we are Open to All. Business owners from coast to coast are committed to keeping their businesses open to all, and now they have a unique opportunity to demonstrate that – thanks to a new partnership with Yelp. The vast majority of small business owners agree that serving all customers equally is good for business and builds thriving communities. Freedom for All Americans is proud to be part of the Open to All Coalition as we work together to ensure that all Americans are free from discrimination, no matter what city or town they call home.”
