LGBT-University will train emerging leaders on critical campaign skills to help win legislative and ballot fights across the country

Phoenix – Starting today Freedom for All Americans is hosting LGBT-University’s first apprenticeship program. This first of its kind campaign training program is cultivating the next wave of movement leaders to spearhead work at the municipal, state and national levels to advance nondiscrimination protections for all Americans.

“As Freedom for All Americans kicks into full gear in multiple states to protect gay and transgender people from discrimination, LGBT-University will ensure we’re training the next generation of movement leaders with the skills they need to run successful campaigns,” said Matt McTighe, campaign manager of Freedom for All Americans. “This program will be an ongoing educational process and won’t end after this week, but will continue as LGBT-U alumni join campaigns throughout the country, until we achieve our goal of winning nondiscrimination protections for all Americans. We’re eager to get to work with this inaugural class of LGBT-U apprentices.”

The week-long program is taking place in Phoenix, Arizona, and includes trainings on issues and skills such as lobbying, public speaking, transgender-specific work, fundraising, coalition building, staff management, operations, and more. Competitive Arizona, a coalition of businesses and individuals promoting economic development through equality and inclusion for all people, including gay and transgender individuals, is hosting LGBT-U, which will provide apprentices with a unique opportunity to engage directly with campaign efforts during the training.

Sixteen participants from across the country are attending, 25% of whom are people of color and several of whom are transgender or gender non-conforming. The students include a mix of campaign veterans, community organizers, consultants, fundraising experts, and people new to politics. Presenters include scholars, lawyers, seasoned campaign managers, political operatives, and LGBT movement leaders. Freedom for All Americans is providing scholarships to cover the cost of travel, lodging and meals.

This curriculum is the start of a year-long program that will include additional opportunities and in-person sessions in the future as well as monthly coaching for participants to ensure they build the tools, experience, and connections to win nondiscrimination campaigns throughout the country.

Freedom for All Americans is the bipartisan campaign dedicated to ensuring every gay and transgender American is fully protected from discrimination under the law, no matter where they live. Our work brings together Republicans and Democrats, businesses big and small, people of faith, and allies from all walks of life to make the case for comprehensive nondiscrimination protections that ensure everyone is treated fairly and equally.
