WASHINGTON, D.C. – Defense Secretary Ash Carter announced today that the Pentagon is updating its Military Equal Opportunity program to include sexual orientation as a protected class. Matt McTighe, campaign manager of Freedom for All Americans, issued the following statement:

“We thank Secretary Ash Carter for the leadership he’s showing in taking our military closer to inclusivity for lesbian, gay and bisexual service members. Extending nondiscrimination protections to the brave men and women who put their lives on the line every single day for our country is a step in the right direction. Taking this important action brings us closer to equality within the ranks of our military.

“But we still face some big obstacles before we can declare victory, and there’s a lot of work to be done in this post-‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ environment to ensure everyone who wants to serve their country is treated equally. That includes demolishing the archaic ban that prevents transgender Americans from serving openly. Everyone brave enough to serve their country – whether they’re lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender – deserves to be treated equally and fairly under our laws.”

Freedom for All Americans is the bipartisan campaign dedicated to ensuring every gay and transgender American is fully protected from discrimination under the law, no matter where they live. Our work brings together Republicans and Democrats, businesses big and small, people of faith, and allies from all walks of life to make the case for comprehensive nondiscrimination protections that ensure everyone is treated fairly and equally.
