WASHINGTON, D.C. – Freedom for All Americans is accepting applications for its inaugural class of LGBT-University Students.  LGBT-University is the first of its kind training program dedicated to cultivating the next generation of movement leaders to spearhead work at the municipal, state and national levels that will advance nondiscrimination protections for all Americans.

“We are working in municipalities and states across the nation to help secure nondiscrimination protections for LGBT Americans, but we can’t do it alone.” Matt McTighe, campaign manager for Freedom for All Americans said.  “That’s where LGBT-University comes in.  LGBT-U will train and equip new leaders to successfully support legislation and policies to ensure every American, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity or expression is protected from discrimination. ”

LGBT-U has several programs to ensure movement leaders have the tools, experience and connections to accomplish this goal, including:

  • Apprenticeship program: A year long program that will provide participants hands-on opportunities to learn skills like campaign organizing, communications, staff management, voter data and targeting from some of the best movement leaders.
  • Issue and skill trainings: Trainings to equip participants to meet the movement’s growing needs, including everything from lobbying and communications to fundraising and coalition building.
  • Campaign trainings: These trainings are tailored for individual campaigns for staff teams, volunteers and allied organizations.
  • Movement job bank: We’ll connect qualified apprentice program graduates, movement leaders, staffers and job seekers with active campaign job opportunities.

The application deadline for the apprenticeship program is August 24th for the first class of LGBT-U, which will be hosted in Arizona from September 21-25th.  Freedom for All Americans will provide scholarships to cover the cost of travel, lodging and meals for accepted participants.

“This program isn’t just for beginners,” LGBT-U director Katie Belanger said.  “Everyone from campaign managers to newcomers are encouraged to apply for the apprenticeship program.”
