Dear Senator Marco Rubio and Senator Rick Scott,
As the leaders of chambers of commerce and economic development corporations in Florida, we know that innovation and inclusion aren’t optional – they help businesses thrive and keep our state competitive for economic investment.
It’s essential to our state economy that all employees, customers, and visitors – and their families – feel safe and welcome in Florida. Nondiscrimination protections ensure those basic freedoms to earn a living, rent or own a home, and participate fully in the community. LGBTQ people currently do not have these express, enduring, comprehensive nondiscrimination protections nationwide, and continue to lack clarity and consistency here in Florida.
These protections would help businesses of all sizes recruit and retain talent. A study by Florida Competes found that inclusive nondiscrimination protections would boost our competitiveness for skilled labor, increasing total economic output by $5.46 billion over the next 10 years and creating nearly 36,000 new jobs. Additional studies consistently show that nondiscrimination boosts productivity and reduces employee turnover. These positive outcomes will also add to our competitiveness for corporate investment and in tourism.
Businesses benefit from clarity and stability. Dozens of Florida cities have passed their own local nondiscrimination ordinances, but we need to put the entire state and country on the same page.
Equal opportunity under the law is essential to ensuring that our diverse economy and workforce can reach their full potential. We respectfully encourage Congress to work together for bipartisan passage of comprehensive federal legislation that protects LGBTQ people from discrimination.
