FFAA Statement on Selection of Mike Pence as Trump’s Running MateJuly 14, 2016 • 3:19 pm
WASHINGTON – News outlets across the nation are reporting that Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump will name Indiana Gov. Mike Pence as his running mate.
Pence gained notoriety after he forced through a religious exemption law that allowed businesses, individuals and nonprofit organizations to discriminate against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Americans. Indiana’s economy has suffered millions of dollars in lost business, tourism, conventions and thousands of lost jobs because of the discriminatory law.
Matt McTighe, executive director for Freedom for All Americans, released the following statement regarding Trump’s announcement:
“Reports of Donald Trump’s selection of Gov. Pence as a running mate are deeply troubling. First he was silent when the Republican Party advanced the most virulently anti-LGBT platform in American history. He has said he will sign into law legislation that has been introduced in Congress that would legalize discrimination against LGBT Americans. And now he is putting the man who led the fight for state-sanctioned discrimination in Indiana right next to him on the ticket.
“While it is certainly discouraging that Donald Trump has selected someone who does not believe everyone should be treated equally under the law as his running mate, Freedom for All Americans will continue our mission to ensure everyone, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity, is protected from discrimination. We will also work to educate voters about the discrimination LGBT Americans face in their everyday lives.”
On Monday, FairnessUSA.org, a coalition of LGBT rights organizations, including Freedom for All Americans Education Fund, Movement Advancement Project, National Center for Transgender Equality and Equality Ohio Education Fund launched an ad that will air during the RNC on Fox News next Thursday. The ad highlights the very real discrimination that transgender Americans face in their everyday lives. The ad, which has already garnered more than one million views, can be seen at FairnessUSA.org.
Freedom for All Americans is the bipartisan campaign to secure full nondiscrimination protections for LGBT people nationwide. Our work brings together Republicans and Democrats, businesses large and small, people of faith, and allies from all walks of life to make the case for comprehensive nondiscrimination protections that ensure everyone is treated fairly and equally.
