Biden Administration Announces Policy Reforms on Transgender Day of Visibility

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today the Biden administration announced major policy reforms in support of transgender and nonbinary Americans.

The changes will allow members of the community to: apply for passports with an “X” gender marker, travel in a safer and more dignified way through airports, update their social security records and documentation more easily, and more. The proposal also includes $10 million to ensure data collection regarding sexual orientation and gender identity in the American Community Survey. It also includes new resources and trainings by various departments to support transgender youth. The announcements come on the international Transgender Day of Visibility, celebrated every March 31 in order to increase support and understanding for transgender people around the world.

Kasey Suffredini (he/him/his), CEO and National Campaign Director of Freedom for All Americans, the campaign to secure LGBTQ nondiscrimination protections nationwide, applauded the administration’s actions and released the following statement:

“We are at a crossroads in which visibility for transgender Americans — especially young transgender people — is more important than ever. Although the discussion around what it means to be transgender may seem new on the national level, transgender children are not a new phenomenon. Transgender youth are our friends, family members, and neighbors; and none of our nation’s children, including transgender youth, should be prohibited from participating in any aspect of life just because of who they are. As someone who transitioned later in life, it would have meant the world to me as a young person to see others like me and to hear affirming words of support. I want transgender youth today to see the love that so many people have for them, to know that we will always have their backs, and to rest assured that we never need to apologize for or hide any part of who we are.”
